Dr Soon Siew Peng (She/Her)

Educational and Work History

Siew graduated with her bachelor, master, and doctorate degrees from The University of Melbourne, under an Australian government postgraduate scholarship. She has had more than a decade of experience as a clinical psychologist, across both private and public sectors.

She started her career in Australia, where she was Program Manager of an eating disorder ward at The Geelong Clinic. After relocating to Singapore in 2016, Siew was a Senior Clinical Psychologist at Changi General Hospital, working with patients with a wide range of psychological issues. She started providing therapy in private practice from 2020, including to corporate clients.

Some organisations Siew has collaborated with or supported include:

Therapy Approaches

Siew draws from a range of evidence-based approaches including Schema Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT).

She believes that one does not need to have a mental health disorder, or wait until burnout, to work on self-care. It is universally beneficial to expand understanding of oneself, coping skills, and development of strengths.

Siew supports her clients to understand how early life experiences contribute to current unhealthy patterns, make sense of and respond adaptively to their emotions, develop self-compassion and meaningful connections, and lead lives aligned with their values.

Background

Siew was born in and grew up in Singapore. She lived in Melbourne, Australia, for 15 years. This gave her a personal understanding of the unique challenges faced by expatriates or people living in a non-native country. Melbourne also shaped her 9.30 pm bedtimes, finicky standards of coffee, and personal values.

After her studies in psychology, Siew fulfilled her childhood dream of becoming a qualified hairdresser, attaining a Certificate III in Hairdressing at The Australian Academy of Hairdressing. She completed training in cutting, styling, colouring and perming. She has styled friends and family for weddings and other events. She was previously a volunteer hairdresser at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne, where she provided haircuts and wig-styling for patients.

Siew is a strong advocate for inclusion and diversity. After relocating back to Singapore, she volunteered as a counsellor at Oogachaga, a non-profit organisation supporting the LGBTQIA+ community.

Given the nature of her work, she has personally benefited from having her own therapy.
